Bat Exclusion Services for Six-Story Building in Capitol Heights, Montgomery, Alabama
In a six-story housing complex located in the Capitol Heights area of Montgomery, Alabama, a resident discovered a bat in the lobby. After contacting Go Pro Wildlife Removal for assistance, the team uncovered a colony of bats living between the building’s exterior and interior walls. The colony extended to several sides of the building and, due to the size and location of the colony, required immediate attention.
The Go Pro Wildlife Removal team developed a three-stage approach to discover the extent of the colony, points of entry and process for bat removal and finally, implement an exclusion strategy to prevent reentry.
Although this building was constructed 42 years ago, age is not necessarily a determining factor in wildlife entry, as many modern structures are equally vulnerable. Common issues such as builders’ gaps, manufacturing defects and improper installations in new construction frequently create access points for nuisance wildlife.
When the Go Pro Wildlife Removal team arrived on site, they quickly identified unmistakable signs of a bat infestation. An unpleasant odor commonly associated with bat colonies prompted a deeper investigation. The team discovered the bats living on the upper floors well above ground level. As the inspection continued, they observed guano (bat droppings) and urine beneath several entry points, as well as along the exterior walls, an area where bats frequently leave such markings. Additional evidence included dark, greasy stains near those openings, caused by sebum (natural oils) from the bats’ bodies, another clear indicator of repeated activity.
This six-story structure with a flat roof and brick facade presented multiple potential entry points for bats. These included gaps behind the metal roof trim, weep holes in the facade and built-in chase-ways, which are grooves cut into solid walls, floors or ceilings that protect building services like pipes and electrical wires within the brick veneer. To secure these vulnerabilities, the Go Pro team applied industrial-grade elastomeric sealant along the roof perimeter. In areas with wider gaps, they fastened down the metal trim, installed foam backer rods and then sealed over them. Weep holes were blocked using black vinyl-coated 1/4-inch wire mesh, preventing bats from further access. The chase-way areas were sealed utilizing a flat coil metal stock cut into strips to fit the chase, secured with fasteners and painted to blend in seamlessly with the building’s exterior.
A one-way bat cone, a tube-like shaped device that sticks out from the roost access points, including a sleeve (often referred to as a slide), was installed at all entry points around the building. These mesh sleeves allow the bats to exit but not re-enter the area, providing a humane and harmless exclusion. The Go Pro team removed the bat cone and sealed up all active access points in the building after making sure the entire colony was removed.
